Other names: Kuding Cha, Bitter Nail Tea
Kuding tea is a traditional Chinese health drink, known for its many medicinal properties. The word 'Ku' means bitter and 'Ding' means spike. But it is commonly known as 'bitter nail tea'.
The leaves used to make this tea are from the evergreen Ilex plant which is grown in Guangxi Province and is a type of Holly but without the sharp points and with a rubbery texture. The long narrow leaves are twisted together to form the distinctive nail or spike shape.
There are many benefits to drinking Kuding tea such as cooling, easing pain and inflammation, helping to speed recovery from a cold. It detoxifies the body and helps to reduce fat and blood pressure.
Only one 'nail' is needed to brew one cup of tea. Kuding can be infused 2-3 times at 85-90 degrees for 1 minute. Alternatively use boiling water and brief infusion (15-20 seconds) up to 15 times.
Medicinal bitterness moving to sweet finish.
