Himalaya Smoked Green
This unique, second flush green tea from the foothills of Sandakphu Peak in Nepal's Ilam district reflects the best qualities of our high-altitude Himalayan teas: vibrant, fresh and flavourful.
The leaves are hand-picked from select tea bushes with high chlorophyll content and valuable antioxidants. In making this green tea one leaf and a bud are plucked and are immediately placed in a withering truck in the fields with a supply of cold air. The fresh leaves are not allowed to oxidise – a step that is essential when making black tea. Instead, they are given a short de-enzyming to reduce the water content and make them pliable. The leaves are put into a roller, then a shaper, producing the distinctive pellet or half-moon pearl shape. Finally the leaves are lightly smoked before being dried in a high-fired oven. The process of smoking evokes the energy, warmth and wisdom of the Sanskrit fire god.
The leaves are best infused using water off the boil. During steeping, the pearls unfurl to reveal tiny full leaves, creating a pale yellow-green liquor. If you like smoked teas like Lapsang Souchong, Russian Caravan, or heavily roasted oolongs this may be the perfect everyday tea.
Fresh and sweet with a smoked background.
